Naturally protected by Banderas Bay and the surrounding Sierra Madre mountain range, Puerto Vallarta residents are fortunate to have little reason to worry about natural disasters, but preparedness for emergencies is always a good idea. Here is a handy list of emergency supplies you should have on hand in your Puerto Vallarta condo or home, or your house in Canada or the USA.

  • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

And while we are very fortunate to have such a safe location here in Puerto Vallarta, our hearts and thoughts go out to those in Oaxaca and Mexico City who have recently suffered devastating earthquakes. Our Puerto Vallarta real estate agents have been actively involved in raising relief funds and we encourage others to help as well. Here are some secure and trusted non-profit organizations that are accepting donations specifically for earthquake relief in Mexico:
