Revolution Day, celebrated on November 20, is an important national holiday in Puerto Vallarta (and across Mexico), commemorating the start of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. This event marked a significant turning point in Mexican history, aiming to overthrow the long-standing dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz and address social inequalities throughout the country. In Puerto Vallarta, the day is marked by a vibrant blend of historical recognition and local cultural traditions.

You’ll see many interesting and fun cultural activities around Vallarta, showcasing the spirit of the revolution. Schools and community organizations participate in parades that include students dressed in traditional attire representing historical figures from the revolution.

If you want to participate in the celebrations, visit the Plaza de Armas, located adjacent to the Puerto Vallarta Malecon, for a civic ceremony including a flag ceremony starting at 8:30am. Afterwards, music and free performances will be held at the amphitheatre across the street.

Culinary traditions also play a vital role in Revolution Day celebrations. Families gather to prepare and share traditional dishes, such as tamales and pozole, which are integral to Mexican culture, and if you’re not great in the kitchen, you’ll be able to find these dishes as special menu items at local restaurants and being offered from street vendors.

Revolution Day is a national holiday, meaning that banks, federal buildings, and offices will be closed, so plan accordingly and spend the day celebrating this important part of Mexican history and culture.
