Mosquitos are most than just annoying pests that leave you with an itchy bite. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in North America, they can carry an assortment of diseases including:
- West Nile Virus
- Dengue
- Yellow Fever
- Lyme Disease
- Malaria
- Chikungunya
- Chagas’ Disease
- Cyclospora
- Monkeypox
- Leishmaniasis
Luckily for those that own a home in Puerto Vallarta, the largest concern with mosquitos is dengue and we have not seen outbreaks of other vector-borne illness in our region. And, in better news, avoiding mosquitos and their bites is not very difficult. Here are a few types to keeping your property mosquito-free.
- Install screen doors and windows at your condo or home.
- If your house or condo has a terrace or garden area, be sure that there is no accumulation of standing water, which will attract mosquitos and encourage them to multiply.
- Try natural repellents like citronella candles, small pots of cloves or planting rosemary, mint or basil in your garden.
- Wear insect repellent when outdoors, especial in the early morning or sunset hours. In local stores, you can find a selection of DEET based and organic repellants available, depending on your preference.
We see more mosquitos during the summer season, but with a little preparation, they are nothing to worry about.
